Rusty the Turtle Returns to Sea

Tomorrow at 4 p.m. at Lori Wilson Park, Rusty the Turtle returns to sea alongside Lucky the Turtle.

Rusty was suffering from parasites which were causing him to float behind Rusty’s Seafood and Oyster Bar. Employees from Rusty’s Seafood and Oyster bar then contacted wildlife officials. The Brevard Zoo’s Sea Turtle Healing Center treated Rusty’s parasites.

Lucky was tangled in fishing line on a local beach and was brought to the Sea Turtle Healing Center for treatment. They journey back to the ocean together tomorrow.

The Brevard Zoo’s partnered with the Sea Turtle Preservation Society in April 2014 to open the Sea Turtle Healing Center. The center works to preserve the native sea turtle. Brevard County beaches are among the most important sea turtle nesting areas in the world.

Vehicles on beaches, uncontrolled coastal development, and other human activity have disturbed the sea turtle’s natural habitat.
